New misophonia study looking at the effect of the drug Propranolol or a behavioural intervention on learning and memory
Now recruiting participants for in-person testing at Mount Sinai in New York
If you are to get to Mount Sinai in New York City, please consider taking part in this interesting new study! The researchers are looking for adult participants aged 18-55, who have sound sensitivity. Participants will be asked to listen to potential trigger sounds as part of the study.
Participants will be able to choose between doing a behavioural intervention (computer task) or a drug intervention (Propranolol). Participants who take part in the drug intervention cannot be pregnant and cannot have a history of head trauma or seizures.
Here’s how the researchers describe the study:
The purpose of this research study is to characterize misophonia, a condition in which certain sounds lead to strong physical and emotional reactions, in the context of other mental disorders, like depression and anxiety. Using propranolol, a drug that is often used for hypertension and sometimes used to alleviate performance anxiety, or a behavioral intervention via a computer task, we want to understand how it could affect your emotional learning and memory on misophonia.
We hope this will lead us to a greater understanding of misophonia. This will require two in-person visits and two remote sessions for 1 month. Payment for taking part in the study is $110, with the chance to up earn up to $225 depending on how certain games are played during the study.
